I have stalled on writing about Soul Cycle for one reason only: I love it so much that I don’t think any blog post can do it justice.
My love for Soul began a little less than two years ago when I first moved to New York. A friend introduced me and I have been hooked since. Even now, when I do all my other work-outs off of classpass, I still pay separately to go to Soul. They are not on classpass.com and probably never will be. They are just too cool.
The service is on point, the amenities are squeaky clean, the community is a cult, the experience is always Soul. Talk about a branding queen.
The first time I went, my ass got kicked. But- if you are relatively fit you will survive. You will be dripping in sweat. I mean DRIPPING. From underwear to my hair, I am always soaked after a Soul Ride. It is so invigorating.
A couple things I have to say… some instructors are better than others. My favorite is by far Akin Akman. He is not only especially wonderful to look at but his Soul Rides are by far the most fun and the most kick-ass. His Wed/ Friday 7am classes are the ultimate Soul experience. The class is filled with his fans who know his style. The level is top-notch and you WILL ride with the rest. The motivation and drive to perform is especially encouraging in these classes. Other commendable instructors I’ve had good experiences with are:
Where: Studios all over New York. My go-to/ favorite studios are the Soho, Noho, and West Village locations.
When: You can find classes by instructor or by studio on their website. They have countless class-times. I highly recommend a class before work (it is simply so invigorating).
Bring: Not to lose fitting work-out pants to avoid getting caught in the bike. A light work-out top. A great sports bra. Athletic socks. Hair tie plus maybe a head band (you will drip in sweat). WATER. Spinning shoes if you have. Studio rents shoes for $2.75. Towels, showers, face wash, hair ties, gum, deodorant, shampoo, conditioner, body wash, etc. are all available at most studios.
Cost: First class is $20. Single classes are $34. Series available, such as 5 classes for $165 or 20 for $600.
Benefits: Fat-burning cardio and full-body work out. The classes incorporate weights and choreography for your arms and core. Without a doubt, your legs and heart get the most out of this class, but there is a little somethin’ somethin’ for everything. Another great benefit is… this is your chance to ride it out. Give it your all and walk out completely refreshed and energetic.
