While I love all the different classes New York has to offer, sometimes coming back to the simplicity of a jog outside in the fresh air does just the trick. Running is one of the most effective workouts for weight loss and it is great for your cardiovsacular health. While many body builder types will tell you that jogging diminishes muscles, I would say there is no harm in going for a jog once or twice a week in addition to other workouts, depending on your own personal fitness goals. If weight loss is a goal, I would definitely focus on food intake and cardio, such as jogging, then complement it with strenght workouts such as barre.
There is something so soothing for the soul when you simply just jog, listening to your tunes. It’s just you, the road ahead, and fresh air. Personally, I love jogging in colder weather, because it is so refreshing. I come back with a clear head. Even my skin feels cleaner.
My go to route is from the west village to the hudson, up the bike path to about 14th, east to 5th avenue, then back down 5th ave and through Washington Square Park. It comes to about 3 to 4 miles, depending on some detours I may take. When I moved to New York, I never thought I would be comfortable jogging on 5th avenue, but for some reason I got used to it and love it. Sometimes I even prefer that over the bike path on the Hudson. On the other hand, the Hudson in the summer is simply a fantastic run with a view of the Statute of Liberty. How Sweat New York is that?! Also, the east river bike path is a great place to run too. I haven’t done the Brooklyn Bridge yet, but once it gets a little warmer I will give that a try.
Where: Anywhere. Make your own path or give this site a look: http://www.walkjogrun.net/running-routes/USA/NY/New%20York/
When: I prefer anytime when there is daylight (just a safety precaution as a woman in the big city).
Bring: Dress warmer in cold weather. If it is really cold I wear warmer running pants, a long sleeve workout shirt, a fleece, gloves, and a hat. I only bring my keys and phone with headphones. Also, I use the Nike Plus Running App to track my runs.
Benefits: Great for your heart, weight loss/fat loss, about 250 calories burned in a 30 min jog, endorphins released, muscle development in legs and abdominals, and stress relief
