After having tried some boxing and kickboxing, I started to really enjoy the fighting type workouts. It gave me such a euphoric feeling during and after. I would really look forward to my kickboxing classes and I would walk out with an incredible amount of energy. More than any other workout, kickboxing gave me the most energy after the fact. I thought to myself that I wanted to take it up a notch and really start learning to defend myself. Krav Maga had been on my mind for years and I always wanted to have the guts to try it. Kickboxing gave me those guts and I signed up for Krav Maga classes at Krav Maga Academy NYC.
The instructor was very friendly, so I did not feel too intimidated. Also, thank god, there were a couple of girls with less experience in the class. The rest were men and most seemed to have martial arts experience. It was a good mix where I felt I could follow other experts but also not feel too alienated.
The class was challenging. Physically and strategically. Let me explain. It was challenging phycally, because, similar to kickboxing, the warm up KILLS you with burpees, push ups, sit ups, crunches, etc. But the combos, partner work, sparing, floor work, etc ALSO keeps KILLING you. Everytime I go, I have to walk away for a minute to catch my breath. I love the challenge! It is strategically challenging, because you do partner work in which you have to maneuver to get one up on your partner. For example, my favorite was the partner floor work. You sit, both on your knees, tap your hands and GO. Pin your partner to the floor. Then he or she does everything they can to get out of your hold. At first, this is intimidating and… well, awkward. But- let’s be real, it is SO much fun!
Be warned, I have walked away with scratches, scabs, and bruises. But what do you expect from a Krav Maga class? Any less and I would be disapointed.
